A trip to SA without going to the cape (even if is now the country's semi-official murder capital) would seem somehow pointless. Parts of it are now permanently overrun with tourists, and the local population make the most of this financial input. If you have the energy, walking up Table Mountain rather than taking the cableway is recommended. Be aware that tourists are sometimes easy targets for thieves (where are you going to run and hide?) But for great views of Robben Island (where prisoners were held, including many in the apartheid era - most notably Mandela) it gives probably the best views from Cape Town.
